Tobacco Caye Southern Belize Barrier Reef

Tobacco Caye (pronounced Tobacco 'key') is an attractive 5 acre palm-fringed island with excellent beaches and surrounded by dazzling, turquoise waters due to the shallow reef along the island's eastern and southern shore. 4 miles north of Southwater Caye, nestled within sight of several mangrove atolls, this tiny island is strategically positioned right on top of the Belize Barrier Reef which makes for excellent snorkelling offshore. Many superb scuba diving sites including excellent wall diving are just 300 feet from shore.

Tobacco Caye was first settled by English Puritans who named the island after the first crop they planted here around 1640 although the islands of Belize were useful hideouts in bygone days for pirates and buccaneers.
Reached by boat from Dangriga in about half an hour there are several accommodation options. There are even a few permanent residents, mainly fishermen who still use old-fashioned hand lines. The people who live here are very friendly and relaxed and you will be very warmly welcomed. If you are looking to get a true taste of island life and can live without the frills and fancies then you will find Tobacco Caye a delight that is hard to leave behind.
