and climb the ruins which are great for panoramic photographs before
continuing towards the Macal River and our accommodations for the next
two nights - Chaa Creek Resort & Spa.
Located in the foothills of the Maya Mountains in Western Belize on a remote
river bank setting which creates a feeling of seclusion; an almost perfect
compromise between comfort and the wilds.
This comfortable jungle lodge has twenty thatched cottage rooms set along the riverside on a 330 acre private reserve in the forested foothills of the Maya Mountains. Guests are able to interact with nature in an environment of tranquillity and peace. Miles of walking trails, Maya temple sites, and the Macal River are just a few attractions; not to mention the 200 species of birds sighted on the property. |

|
"An adventure travelers dream" is how Vogue magazine recently described
Jaguar Reef Lodge's unique location, naming the Lodge one of the
world's best new resorts.
Nestled on miles of golden sand beach between the Maya Mountains and the Caribbean Sea, the fourteen traditional thatch roof cabanas and beautiful main lodge combine comfortable accomodations with a sense of relaxation. The Lodge offers a wide choice of exciting day trips to the Cockscomb Jaguar Reserve, Bird-Watching and Snorkeling trips to the idyllic Barrier Reef Islands. There is an onsite Dive Centre offering a range of scuba diving trips to the Barrier Reef. A limited range of Spa Treatments can be arranged. |

Day 6 - Sat 23rd Dec - Southern Barrier Reef Bliss!
|
|
|
Depart by boat from the Lodge after breakfast to the Sittee River
for a day
filled with photo-opportunities! Excellent bird life here including egrets,
herons and hundreds of other species. Green iguana thrive here and you
will soon learn to spot them in the jungle canopy that borders the river.
After a slow cruise around Anderson Lagoon continue down the
narrowing waterway and out into the Caribbean Sea. Soon you will see
dozens of beautiful tropical islands. Watch closely for
bottle-nosed dolphins; they love to cruise this protected inner waterway
and are often sighted between here and the Barrier Reef.
|
|
|
There will be several stops for snorkelling, swimming and lunch as
you cruise amongst the idyllic barrier reef islands: Bread and Butter Cayes,
Carrie Bowe Caye, Southwater Caye, Tobacco Caye and Man-O'-War Caye bird sanctuary.
The final stop is lovely Coco Plum Caye with beautiful snow white sands and surrounded by crystal clear turqoise waters. Here there will be time to swim, snorkel, sunbathe and explore. Coco Plum is well known for the many glass bottles that are found here, many dating back to the age of the pirates! |
|
|---|---|
|
As the sun starts to set over the magnificent Maya Mountains, visible in the distance, we must bid farewell to this beautiful Island and begin our journey home. The 30 minute ride back to the Lodge will give you time to reflect upon the incredible creatures and ecosystems that make up this pristine marine habitat. |
