Tobacco Caye is part of
the Southwater Caye Marine Reserve which has been designated a
World Heritage Site.
Nestled within sight of several mangrove atolls, this tiny island is strategically positioned right on top of the Belize Barrier Reef which makes for excellent snorkelling offshore and many superb scuba diving sites are within a short boat ride. Scuba diving facilities are available on the island.
Tobacco Caye was first settled by English Puritans who
named the island after the first crop they planted here around 1640 although the islands of Belize
were useful hideouts in bygone days for pirates and buccaneers.
Now there are only a few permanent residents, mainly fishermen who still use old-fashioned hand lines. .
